Nandan Nilekani, co-founder and chairman of Infosys, criticised the trend towards creating more complex artificial intelligence (AI) models, saying it has not led to better results. Sharing his thoughts on AI at People+Ai Mela in Bengaluru, he pointed out that many of these models have been kept secret by companies and become something of a “black box.” He said this lack of openness has slowed innovation, the economic era reports.

Elm Crab praised China’s approach to building AI models. He said China is able to use less resources to create effective AI models and is transparent about how it can be. He believes this openness helps to spread knowledge about AI and supports global development.
He also said that AI models have become more like general merchandise (products) and many new models have been created. He highlighted the Chinese Deepseek project. This openly shared AI-building technology, making it easier for others to learn and innovate. “They served the world, and it went back to the call,” he said.
“I have always believed that models are products. This has proven to be true. Hundreds of models are built. China’s Deepseek categorized model construction. Last week they tweeted all open source practices. The knowledge to build models is rapidly commoditized,” added Nirekani.
He also highlighted the need for high quality data, especially in Indian language, to boost the growth of AI in India. He mentioned the initiative Ai4bharat by IIT Madras, focusing on open source AI in Indian languages. Nilekani has supported the project for the past few years and is expected to continue for the next three years.
He concluded that while AI models continue to evolve, the real focus should be on using AI in practical ways to positively impact people’s lives.
