Google has announced a new AI feature that uses Gemini AI bots to add events to Google Calendar, based on details in Gmail email.
The email that Gemini thinks is explaining is that it will get a new “add to calendar button” that will start interacting with events. Click to open the Gemini Prompt Sidebar, confirming that the event has been added and providing an edit button if you need to change anything based on the screenshot provided by Google. You can already add events in the Gemini side panel, but now it’s all happening automatically.
This feature is similar to Google’s past non-AAI features that have done things like automatically adding or updating Google Calendar events based on a specific type of booking or travel email. Google says changes to Workspace for business, business, and educational users, as well as for Google’s AI premium subscribers are currently being rolled out.
This feature did a good job when I tried it out, identifying that there were two separate events in my test email. But it didn’t work exactly as Google explained. Not only did they say they added events, they also looked at the details and asked if they wanted to add them to their calendar. I added it when I replied with “Yes”, but it didn’t provide an edit button in the sidebar. You can click on the event and go straight to Google Calendar. That’s good.
