Recognizing the potential for AI transformation, Seton Hall University has launched the AI Academy as part of its commitment to interdisciplinary innovation. The initiative will bring together faculty members from a wide range of disciplines and promote collaboration on curriculum development, research and grant opportunities centered around generator AI.
The Faculty Matters Podcast is a biweekly series exploring education, research and teacher life, and recently dedicated an episode to the AI Academy. Dr. Host Mary Balkun, professor and director of faculty, welcomed Dr. Sina Shokoohyar, assistant professor in computing and decision-making science. Dr. Jason Hemann, assistant professor of computer science. Hongfei “Frank” Tang, Ph.D., Professor of CFA, Finance, Viswa Viswanathan, Ph.D., Professor of Computing and Decision Sciences, discusses the goals, achievements and broader implications of the Academy of AI.
Hub of interdisciplinary collaboration
The AI Academy is not limited to one division. It spans multiple disciplines and captivates faculty members in computing, finance, philosophy, psychology, mathematics, and social sciences. According to Tang, this diversity allows for a broader perspective on AI applications, ensuring ethical, technical and practical implications are taken into consideration.
“There is a possibility for AI in almost every discipline,” says Viswanathan, whose original research in AI was conducted in the late 1980s. The academy’s work is organized into specialized groups focused on curriculum design (such as AI certificates), research into the impact of AI in areas such as finance and mental health, and securing grants to support innovation.
Prepare students for the future
One of the Academy’s main missions is to integrate AI into the Seton Hall curriculum. Faculty are developing certificate programs, courses and training initiatives to help students graduate with mandatory AI abilities. Hemann compared AI proficiency to basic computer skills. “Do you know how to write down on your resume that you know how to use Microsoft Word? I think AI literacy will be as expected in the near future,” he said.
As AI tools become more common, Seton Hall students will be able to use them effectively in their careers.
Ethics and Environmental Impact
The podcast episode also delved into AI’s ethical and environmental concerns. While much attention has been paid to the high energy consumption of AI, Shokoohyar pointed out the possibility of reducing waste. For example, AI-powered demand forecasts can help retailers like Sam’s Club optimize their inventory and minimize food waste.
The ethical implications of AI are another major focus for the academy. Dr. Mark Couch, an associate professor of philosophy, is a major discussion of AI ethics, particularly regarding data privacy and intellectual property. Viswanathan said, “This Genie hasn’t returned to the bottle,” highlighting the importance of actively tackling the social impact of AI.
