“I am a native Hungarian speaker and I know that Hungarian is one of the most difficult languages to learn to pronounce,” Janso said. “It’s a very unique language. We coached[Brody and Jones]and they did a great job, but we wanted it to be perfect so even locals wouldn’t know the difference. .”
“There were artistic reasons for doing it,” says Rupal Patel, professor of communication sciences and disorders at Northeastern University. “The artistic reason is that the movie viewer does not question the authenticity of the roles of these actors in the Hungarian language. …In fact, it is more inclusive for Hungarian listeners and viewers. I think it will be.”
The production team attempted to edit the actors’ Hungarian language through traditional post-production processes, but found it difficult to edit due to the peculiarities of the Hungarian language, especially the vowels. So the production team turned to Respeecher, known for its AI voice work in Hollywood, to blend Brody and Jones’ performances with the Hungarian spoken by native speakers, including Janso. Patel explains that the process of voice conversion is more like modification than manufacturing.
“If I want to transform my voice into Michelle Obama’s voice, I say something, she says something, and we graft that person’s voice onto another person’s voice.” Patel says. “We’re not eliminating Brody’s or Jones’ performances entirely, but we’re changing them. These actors learned to speak in Hungarian and actually took on the roles. That’s really amazing.”
Patel said the application of AI in “Brutalist” is similar to more traditional sound editing in film, where actors make manual tweaks to add, remove or adjust the way they say certain words or lines. “The troublesome thing about AI is that it feels like the beginning of the end,” Patel says. “Nowadays, it feels like it would be okay for AI to just remove some of the imperfections in the accent…[but]perhaps over time, we would care less and less about the artist, and the AI would automatically pick up on that. Patel argues that “AI is an evolution of the tools we have,” but Rebecca Kleinberger, an assistant professor at Northeastern University who studies the use of voice technology, says voice conversion is a thing of the past. Some people are more diligent about learning languages and accents than others, which becomes even more difficult as you get older. For some actors, AI could become a kind of language assistant that works in conjunction with traditional voice training.

Kleinberger is adamant that there is inherent value in actors like Brody and Jones learning languages and accents, and that shouldn’t be lost as AI is more widely adopted. Language, especially specialized languages like Hungarian, connects with culture, behavior, and psychology in ways that are useful to actors and emotional to audiences.
“This means a lot to their cultural preparation and learning,” Kleinberger said. “If we remove that from the film, does it take away some of the authenticity and meaning of the actor’s work itself?”
