SAGINAW COUNTY, MI – Hemlock Semiconductor is one step closer to increasing its manufacturing capacity in Saginaw County, thanks to newly secured $325 million in CHIPS Act funding.
The U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded Thomas Township-based Hemlock Semiconductor (HSC) up to three dollars under the CHIPS Incentive Program commercial manufacturing facility funding opportunity, according to a news release issued Tuesday, Jan. 7. Announced $25 million in direct funding. It was announced last fall.
The award will support the construction of a new manufacturing facility in Saginaw County, creating approximately 180 manufacturing jobs and more than 1,000 construction jobs, a U.S. Department of Commerce news release said.
“We are pleased to announce the signing of a direct funding agreement with the Department of Commerce under the CHIPS Act that will enable us to serve the leading edge semiconductor market with high-quality, sustainably produced polysilicon. This agreement marks an important milestone in strengthening our manufacturing capabilities as we continue to deliver on-demand products,” AB Ghosh, HSC Chairman and CEO, said in a statement.
“The new facility will play a critical role in strengthening the U.S. semiconductor supply chain. Support from the Department of Commerce and dedicated partners at all levels of government helped make this possible. We look forward to contributing to the revitalization of the domestic supply chain, creating good-paying jobs and advancing technological leadership in the semiconductor industry.”
HSC will receive funding upon completion of project milestones, the release states.
“CHIPS for U.S. HSC investments will increase supply chain security by ensuring the United States has a reliable domestic supply of polysilicon, the foundation of semiconductors,” U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said in a statement. It will be helpful.”
“Establishing domestic sources of these materials is critical to the development of cutting-edge chip applications that will help strengthen our economy and national security. Through targeted investments like this, the Biden-Harris administration will driving innovation in industries and creating jobs across the country.”

HSC was founded in 1961 and has approximately 1,350 employees at its headquarters in Thomas Township. It is owned by Corning and Shin-Etsu Handtie.
