PHOENIX — An Arizona-based semiconductor maker is receiving a total of $407 million in funding to build a new facility in Peoria, officials said.
Final funding to support Amkor Technology Arizona, Inc. will come from the federal government through CHIPS and the Science Act.
“This final agreement with Amkor brings another important part of the microchip supply chain back to our nation and solidifies Arizona’s position as a world leader in microchip packaging and innovation.” Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly said in a news release last week.
The company is a subsidiary of Amkor Technology, Inc., the largest contract semiconductor assembly and test company based in the United States.
What will the Arizona-based semiconductor manufacturer do?
The $407 million award will directly support the company’s approximately $2 billion investment in building an advanced packaging and testing facility in Peoria.
Amkor Technology Arizona’s future facility is expected to create more than 4,000 jobs in Arizona, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Half of these jobs are in manufacturing, with the remainder reflecting construction-related jobs that are filled during peak facility construction.
How will an Arizona-based semiconductor manufacturer raise capital?
The U.S. Department of Commerce will release funds as the company achieves various milestones on its Peoria facility construction project.
“With Amkor’s state-of-the-art facility in Peoria, we will not only create thousands of good-paying jobs, but also enable critical technologies such as artificial intelligence and self-driving cars to be manufactured and packaged right here in the United States. “We’re making sure that we’re driven by,” Kelly said. .
He sees the upcoming facility as a way to establish Arizona as a national manufacturing hub for semiconductors used in cell phones, fighter jets, self-driving cars, artificial intelligence, ovens and the chips that power computers. There is.
With investments like these, Arizona is positioned to emerge as a global hub for microelectronics research, development, testing, manufacturing and packaging, he added.
“These investments are a testament to the success of the CHIPS Act in strengthening supply chains, strengthening national security, and solidifying America’s leadership in the global semiconductor industry,” Kelly said.
