Nvidia Shield TV has new updates, but there is a known issue that could result in the end of support for Google Home.
The latest release of Nvidia Shield TV is about five years old now, but it’s still a supported device and receives occasional updates. The last update was available in beta in October, and the next update is already available. A new third hotfix update is currently in the works, in addition to the 9.1.1 update released in 2022.
According to Nvidia, this latest hotfix brings “enhanced security” for 4K DRM content playback and support for parental controls in French. However, this update comes with significant known issues. In the 2019 release of Shield, an update will end support for Google Home.
As such, Nvidia says the update will initially only be enabled for the 2015 and 2017 generations of Shield, waiting for Google to fix the issue with the 2019 model Home. However, “This hotfix will break Google Home” is still listed as a known issue, so it’s unclear whether this update will still break Home support in the 2015 and 2017 releases. . Some users who installed the update on older generations did not mention any issues.
The third version of 9.1.1+HotFix will be available soon as version 33.2.0.295, but currently only for 2015 and 2017 SHIELD. This update deprecates the Google Home integration in 2019 SHIELD. We are waiting for Google to fix the issues revealed in the release for these devices.
