~ Collaboration accelerates joint development of semiconductor IP suitable for automotive applications ~
Kariya City Japan, October 29, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — DENSO Corporation and Quadric.inc have signed a development license agreement for Neural Processing Unit (NPU) *1, a semiconductor specialized for AI calculation processing. Under this agreement, DENSO will acquire the IP core license for Quadric’s Chimera GPNPU *2, and the two companies will jointly develop automotive semiconductor intellectual property (NPU).
As intelligent systems such as autonomous driving and connected technologies advance, vehicles will need to process vast amounts of information obtained from on-board sensors, vehicle-to-vehicle communications, and cloud communications in real time. For this reason, the performance of in-vehicle SoCs*3 that can process large amounts of information quickly and efficiently is becoming increasingly important.
DENSO and Quadric have been considering the development of a semiconductor IP (NPU) using Chimera GPNPU (General Purpose Neural Processing Unit) for automotive SoC, and now they have decided to develop an automotive semiconductor IP (NPU) that combines DENSO’s RISC-V. We decided to jointly develop it. * 4-based processor and Quadric’s Chimera GPNPU.
DENSO’s RISC-V-based processor IP is ISO26262 ASIL*5D compliant, making it ideal for safety-critical automotive applications. As vehicles become more intelligent, AI will become a pivotal factor in determining vehicle value. Quadric’s Chimera GPNPU has a unique architecture that allows matrix and vector operations and scalar (control) code to be processed in a single execution pipeline. It can flexibly handle diverse computational tasks and can be applied to a variety of AI functions. Additionally, Chimera GPNPU allows automotive system developers to add unique AI capabilities to their products for years to come.
By jointly developing new semiconductor IP (NPU), DENSO and Quadric will contribute to the realization of in-vehicle SoCs that can flexibly respond to changes in AI trends over the long term, from product development to post-release. We will promote the development of highly safe AD/ADAS *6 products. Furthermore, both companies will continue to support the ever-evolving needs of mobility through the development of semiconductor technology.
Hiroshi KondoHead of Mobility Electronics Business Group, DENSO:
DENSO advances systems that connect cars and society by combining our system development capabilities and a wide range of technologies. Through this, we will work to address complex social issues in the future, such as realizing a carbon-neutral society, promoting a circular economy, and eradicating fatal traffic accidents.
One of the businesses we are strengthening is semiconductors, which are the foundation of the computing infrastructure that advances automotive intelligence. We look forward to the development of automotive semiconductor IP that utilizes secondary chimera GPNPUs and can flexibly respond to AI trends with low power consumption.
Quadric.inc Veerbhan Kheterpal, CEO:
As a Tier 1 supplier to major automakers around the world, DENSO has subjected its technology to comprehensive and intensive benchmarking exercises.
The selection of DENSO as an IP partner for ADAS/AD processors is a testament to the growing maturity and breadth of Quadric’s GPNPU processors.
