(WXYZ) — More than $300 million in federal funding is coming to Michigan to help expand the state’s semiconductor industry.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced Monday that the Biden-Harris administration will donate $325 million to Michigan-based manufacturing company Hemlock Semiconductor to build a new facility.
Hemlock Semiconductor is one of the largest manufacturers of ultra-high purity polysilicon used in electronics and solar panels.
The facility is expected to bring 180 permanent manufacturing jobs and more than 1,000 construction jobs to the area.
The funding was part of the CHIPS and Science Act, which aims to bring supply chains and “cutting-edge” jobs to the United States, according to the governor’s office. According to the governor’s office, this is the largest CHIPS investment to date in Michigan.

In addition to federal funding, Michigan is also supporting the project with $40 million from the Make It in Michigan Competitiveness Fund.
