Oakland University College of Engineering and Professional Continuing Education (PACE), in partnership with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and SEMI Foundation, will host “Semiconductor Day” in the Oakland Center Founders Ballroom on Tuesday, October 22, from noon to 3 p.m. . Auckland University campus.
“Anything that has an on and off switch has semiconductors in it,” said Rick VanIttersum II, Michigan program manager for the SEMI Foundation’s SCAN (SEMI Career and Apprenticeship Network). “Semiconductors enable the apps, gadgets and technology of today’s digital world and enable tomorrow’s miracles.
“Semiconductor Day highlights the advancements and career opportunities made possible by microelectronics for students and emerging talent, and how it impacts Michigan State,” Van Ittersam said.
In the morning, the Oakland University School of Engineering, the GEAR UP program and the SEMI Foundation will host 75 local high school students from Pontiac High School, International Technology Academy and Oak Park High School as part of the Semiconductor Day event. While on campus, high school students take guided tours of the College of Engineering, visit state-of-the-art semiconductor research and development facilities, and complete hands-on activities designed to increase their interest in semiconductors.
To meet the anticipated demand for microelectronics, the semiconductor industry workforce is projected to grow by more than 100,000 jobs in the United States by 2030. Michigan currently ranks in the nation’s top 10 for semiconductor workforce, with job growth projected to increase by at least 11% by 2030. for the next five years.
At Semiconductor Day, attendees will discover career opportunities available in the semiconductor industry and engage with companies through interactive experiences. Participants will be able to:

“Semiconductor Day gives us the opportunity to connect with companies that are playing a key role in the technologies that will create our exciting future,” said Hongwei Khoo, Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Auckland.
