As artificial intelligence (AI) transforms education, educators are navigating a new world full of possibilities and challenges. Jackson College and the Jackson County Middle School District will host a day-long workshop, “From Values to Vision: Rethinking Our Approach to AI in Education,” on Saturday, October 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in JC’s Bert Walker Hall Community Room.
Nearly two years after the introduction of ChatGPT and the widespread adoption of other AI tools such as Gemini and Magic School, the education sector is entering a new era. This interactive workshop offers educators an opportunity to explore how they can ethically and effectively integrate AI into the classroom while addressing concerns about academic integrity and the changing needs of students.
The workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Troy Hicks, Professor of English and Education at Central Michigan University. As Chair of the Department of Teacher and Special Education and Director of the Chippewa River Writing Project, Dr. Hicks has extensive experience in both AI and education. Dr. Hicks will guide participants throughout the day, providing practical tools and insights to help teachers align AI with their educational values.
Agenda highlights:
Part 1: Clarifying your values as an educator in the age of AI Part 2: Exploring rapid engineering across AI tools Part 3: Rethinking challenges in the age of AI Part 4: From idea to implementation: Rapid prototyping with AI tools
Designed for educators in grades 4-12, this workshop helps teachers rethink challenges and the role of AI in the classroom (5 SCECH Continuing Education Hours). Participants will leave equipped with strategies to incorporate AI tools in ways that support ethical teaching, enhance learning, and meet student needs. Come to this interactive workshop with curiosity and a willingness to try AI tools; rethink your approach to AI.
Cost to attend the workshop is $25 (paid through the JCISD system for local educators) or free for Jackson College faculty and staff. Educators are encouraged to bring a laptop and an open mind to this interactive, hands-on event. JCISD educators can register by clicking here. Jackson College faculty can register by emailing Steve Tuckey at tuckeysteven@jccmi.edu.
