US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (September 21) welcomed a landmark deal to set up a new advanced semiconductor manufacturing plant.
The chip foundry will focus on advanced sensing, communications and power electronics for national security, next-generation communications and green energy applications.
The factory will be set up to manufacture infrared, gallium nitride and silicon carbide semiconductors.
The chip factory will be built in support of the Indian Semiconductor Mission and a strategic technology partnership between Bharat Semi, 3rdiTech and the US Space Command.
Additionally, the two leaders commended GlobalFoundries’ (GF) joint efforts to promote a resilient, secure and sustainable semiconductor supply chain, including through the establishment of the GF Kolkata Power Centre in Kolkata, West Bengal.
According to a joint fact sheet released by the White House after Prime Minister Modi and President Biden’s meeting in Delaware, the Kolkata facility will strengthen mutually beneficial collaboration in semiconductor manufacturing research and development, enabling breakthroughs in the areas of zero- and low-emissions, connected cars, Internet of Things devices, AI and data centers.
The two leaders also welcomed the launch of a new U.S.-India Advanced Materials Research and Development Forum to expand collaboration between U.S. and Indian universities, national laboratories and private researchers.
