AMD CEO Lisa Su denied claims of Nvidia dominating the AI market, arguing there’s always room for more companies to enter.
AMD is aggressively expanding its AI arsenal, aiming to compete head-to-head with NVIDIA in upcoming markets.
It would not be wrong to conclude that NVIDIA has been completely dominating the past few quarters. This is based not only on financial results but also on how Team Green has been successful in increasing the adoption of AI products in the industry. The company has been earning several times the revenue that its competitors have been able to achieve, so a “dominant” market conclusion is not too far off the mark.
However, AMD CEO Lisa Su believes there is still optimism, saying in an interview with Jim Cramer (via CNBC) that in the long term, computing applications will need diversity.
The idea is that there is no one size fits all in computing, there is no one architecture as we know it, and you really need the right computing for each application.
– AMD CEO Lisa Su
AMD’s CEO suggests that eventually there will be an increased need for “computing specialization,” especially in the AI market, which will lead to a greater need for diversity in the long term and, as a result, a move away from companies like NVIDIA. Lisa argues that as AI becomes a more significant part of individuals’ lives, we will move away from the idea of evaluating technology based on the ROI it generates. AMD expects the AI market to reach up to $400 billion by 2027, which is an indication of how valuable the technology will be in the future.
I truly believe that AI will impact everyone’s lives. It’s just starting today. So let’s not rush it. Technology trends unfold over years, not months.
– AMD CEO Lisa Su
In terms of onboard computing capabilities, AMD lags behind the likes of NVIDIA, but Team Red is rapidly leveling up its existing portfolio and is already working on its “Accelerated” AI roadmap, with plans to release the Instinct MI325X AI accelerator in the coming months. Separately, AMD also plans to roll out its MI400 lineup for 2025, so the competition is likely to become more aggressive in the future.
