But behind America’s rise are many Chinese scientists and engineers whose important contributions remain largely in the shadows.
Many of the most advanced semiconductor etching equipment over the past 40 years have come out of Silicon Valley, the U.S. hub of innovation, he said on a program hosted by the Shanghai Stock Exchange and China State Radio in July.
“When you actually look at the equipment and who’s making it, it’s actually 70 to 80 percent Chinese students,” said Yin, who worked in the United States for decades and co-founded the Society of Chinese Engineers in Silicon Valley in the late 1980s.
But now, “80 to 90 percent of them have already returned to China,” he added.
