The World Integrated Circuit Association (WICA) recently released its ranking of the top 100 cities in the global semiconductor industry for 2023. According to the list, the United States and China top the ranking with 26 cities each, while South Korea, Japan and Taiwan have 9, 9 and 5 cities listed respectively.
In particular, Shanghai and Beijing ranked 5th and 9th in the global rankings, making it into the top 10, highlighting China’s growth potential and excellence in the semiconductor industry.
In the 2023 Top 100 Cities in Global Semiconductor Industry Competitiveness White Paper (hereinafter referred to as the White Paper), recently published by WICA, Santa Clara, Hsinchu, Seoul, San Jose, and Shanghai were listed as the top five cities.
The white paper highlights that China has the world’s largest semiconductor application market and a complete industrial chain. Its design and manufacturing sector is at a mid-level global level, with a large number of design companies and a high growth rate. Moreover, China’s packaging and testing technologies have reached the world’s most advanced level.
Supported by favorable policies and financial resources, China’s semiconductor industry is reportedly expected to continue experiencing robust growth, driven by growing demand for automotive electronics, the Internet of Things (IoT), industrial control, and new energy.
According to the white paper, Shanghai is home to several semiconductor giants, including SMIC, Huahong Semiconductor, Unisoc and AMEC, making it a key hub for China’s semiconductor industry. In recent years, Shanghai’s semiconductor sector has sustained growth, reportedly building a complete industrial chain from design and manufacturing to packaging and testing.
In addition, the white paper also points out that Beijing is home to a number of major semiconductor companies, including Tsinghua Unigroup, SMIC, Naura, GigaDevice, etc. Beijing has gradually become a core region of the global semiconductor industry, with a developed industrial chain covering design, manufacturing, and packaging/testing, forming a relatively complete industrial ecosystem.
