The NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV Pro features an NVIDA Tegra X1 CPU (the same processor as the Nintendo Switch), 3GB of RAM, and 16GB of built-in storage. In terms of performance and versatility, the Shield Pro blows away Roku, Apple TV, Fire Stick, Chromecast, and just about every other media player. It’s also incredibly format-aware, supporting every audio codec including Hi-Res Lossless, and just about every video codec except AV1. It’s also compatible with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital Plus, 4K Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10 (but not HDR10+).
Shield Pro is one of the few devices that supports GeForce Now, which lets you stream PC games to your TV even if you don’t own a gaming PC. All you need is a high-speed Internet connection, as the remote PC does all the processing work. Shield Pro is also a great streaming device for those who still have a large library of local media content. It comes with a built-in Plex server, so you can organize all your digital media in one place.
If you just want to stream 4K movies and TV shows from popular apps, there are plenty of other better (and cheaper) options out there these days, but if you’re looking for a device that can do more — like act as a centralized server for localized media, stream loads of high-fidelity lossless or Atmos audio content, or play PC games without too much investment — the Shield TV Pro remains the most powerful and versatile choice, even if you’re not yet part of the Apple ecosystem.
