Purdue University signed an agreement that allows for online learning programs, faculty exchanges and collaborative research opportunities.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University continues to expand its international horizons, signing partnership agreements with several universities in Malaysia that will focus on artificial intelligence and data science.
Purdue University Senior Vice President for Partnerships and Online Affairs Dimitrios Peroulis signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with education representatives from the Malaysian government and Malaysian academia and industry with the goal of creating impactful and economically viable educational content and opportunities.
The primary purpose of the MOU is to expand Purdue’s land patent mission internationally by developing new online programs in the rapidly expanding fields of AI and data science, thereby expanding new educational programs and stimulating new research activities.
“We are excited to gain valuable insight into the needs of Malaysian students and take the next step with our new partners,” said Peroulis, the Riley Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University. “These efforts will ignite breakthroughs in education and research and foster dynamic collaboration between industry and academia.”
During his stay in Malaysia, Peroulis attended a signing ceremony with education officials from UCSI University, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, UCSI College, Universiti Tenaga Nasional and AI Nusantara, a leading institution for innovation and talent development in AI and semiconductors. He also met with Zaini Ujang, chairperson of the Malaysian Higher Education Blueprint 2015-2025 Task Force under the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Higher Education.
The partnership comes on the heels of Purdue University announcing an online Master of Science in Data Science and an online Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence with a dual major in August.
The partnership with the Malaysian education leader will initially focus on professional development programs and graduate-level dual/joint degrees or certificates. Each MOU will be valid for four years.
Agreements with each educational partner will explore opportunities for online learning programs, faculty exchanges and collaborative research. Funding for these efforts could come from Malaysian national funds, international foundations and Purdue’s own programs.
These partnerships are the latest to further Purdue’s international reach. In July, President Moon Chang signed three MOUs with leading European research institutions to deepen existing relationships and accelerate research and education opportunities. He signed strategic agreements with Greece’s University of Piraeus, the Technical University of Crete and King’s College London.
