(Reuters) – Apple’s latest iPhone with the A18 chip that it plans to unveil at its event on Monday has been developed using SoftBank Corp.’s Arm’s latest V9 chip design, the Financial Times reported on Saturday.
Apple is scheduled to hold its fall event on September 9 at its headquarters in Cupertino, California, where it is expected to announce a range of new iPhones as well as updates to other devices and apps.
Last September, Apple signed a contract with Arm that will extend beyond 2040, giving the company a boost in its chip technology.
Arm said in July that its V9 chips accounted for 50% of its smartphone sales.
Arm owns the intellectual property behind the computing architecture of most smartphones in the world, and licenses it to Apple and many other companies.
Apple uses Arm technology in designing its own custom chips for iPhones, iPads and Macs.
The two companies have a long history together: Apple was one of the first to partner to create the company in 1990, before releasing the Newton handheld computer in 1993, which used an Arm-based processor chip.
Although Newton was a failure, Arm gained an edge in mobile phone chips because of its low power consumption and ability to extend battery life.
