Governor Kathy Hockle and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer today announced significant progress on the first phase of construction for Edwards Vacuum’s $319 million dry pump manufacturing facility in the town of Genesee County, Alabama. Edwards Vacuum, a part of the Atlas Copco Group, is a global leader in vacuum and abatement equipment for the semiconductor industry and a key supplier to semiconductor manufacturers. Today, Majority Leader Schumer and Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Hope Knight, along with Edwards Vacuum executives, toured the site, located in the Western New York Science & Technology Advanced Manufacturing Park. Edwards Vacuum’s decision to invest in New York State follows the passage of the New York State Green Chips Act and the federal Chips Science Act. These two pieces of legislation, combined, are expected to bring an unprecedented $100 billion to Central New York and create approximately 50,000 jobs. Additionally, GlobalFoundries is planning an $11.6 billion expansion in the capital region that is expected to create more than 1,500 direct jobs and thousands more indirect jobs.
“Edwards Vacuum’s commitment to upstate New York will create 600 good-paying jobs and attract additional investment in both Western New York and the Finger Lakes region,” said Governor Hockle. “With New York State’s Green Chips Program and the federal Chips Science Act, we will support the revival of manufacturing in our state and solidify our position as a global hub for innovation and the nation’s semiconductor manufacturing epicenter.”
Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer said, “This milestone marks a major step forward toward the opening of Edwards Vacuum’s new dry pump manufacturing facility in Genesee County, a critical addition to positioning Upstate New York as a global epicenter for the semiconductor industry. Vast amounts of the world’s computer chips are manufactured using Edwards Vacuum equipment, and today Genesee County stands at the beating heart of that effort for America. From Micron to GlobalFoundries, every major semiconductor company in New York and across the United States needs vacuum technology like the one Edwards manufactures in their chip factories. When I encouraged Edwards Vacuum to expand in Western New York, I knew it would be a win for Edwards Vacuum, for Western New York’s economy, and for America’s semiconductor supply chain. And today that is becoming a reality.” My CHIPS & Science Law has brought investment after investment to Upstate New York. “Thanks to you, Edwards Vacuum celebrated a groundbreaking milestone today, adding another stop to the semiconductor superhighway along the bustling I-90 corridor tech hub. Edwards Vacuum is a major player in the semiconductor supply chain, revitalizing Genesee County with a $319 million facility and 600 new high-paying jobs. I will continue to pursue federal incentives through my CHIPS & Science Law to bring this project to fruition, revitalize Genesee County’s economy, and position Western New York as the semiconductor industry epicenter for upstate New York and the nation.”
“Edwards Vacuum continues to make great progress with the construction of a new, state-of-the-art facility that will create hundreds of good-paying jobs and generate millions of dollars in investment,” said Hope Knight, president, CEO and commissioner of Empire State Development. “The future of domestic semiconductor manufacturing is in New York State, which continues to grow as a global hub for advanced manufacturing, research and development.”
