(Reuters) – A design flaw in semiconductor giant Nvidia’s next artificial intelligence (AI) chip could delay the launch of the company by more than three months, tech publication The Information reported on Friday.
The setback could affect customers including Meta Platforms Inc., Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Microsoft Corp., which have ordered chips collectively worth tens of billions of dollars, the company said, citing people who make Nvidia chips and server hardware.
The AI chip company unveiled its Blackwell chip series in March, which is the successor to its previous flagship AI chip, the Grace Hopper Superchip, designed to speed up generative AI applications.
“As we have previously stated, demand for the hopper is very strong, with widespread sampling at Blackwell commencing and production expected to ramp up in the second half of the year,” an Nvidia spokesperson said in an emailed statement in response to the reports.
Microsoft said it had nothing to add, while Meta and Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Nvidia told Microsoft and another major cloud service provider this week that it was experiencing production delays for its most advanced AI chips, in its Blackwell series, The Information reported, citing a Microsoft employee and another person familiar with the matter.
