Microsoft called on Washington to loosen its semiconductor export curbs, warning that the government risks making “strategic missteps” in the global AI arms race that could encourage US allies to use China’s chips.
In a blog post, Tech Giant president Brad Smith wrote that Beijing uses rules designed to limit access to cutting-edge technologies used to promote artificial intelligence.
Under the Biden administration’s AI proliferation rules, even US allies such as Switzerland, Singapore and the UAE are subject to a cap on the number of chips they can buy, forcing them to look elsewhere for the components they need for their AI infrastructure.
It’s coming as the Trump administration is about to introduce even more stringent versions of control, Bloomberg reported this week.
