TToday, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) announced that it is expanding its efforts in artificial intelligence to ensure that AI-powered educational tools are based on research and best practices in teaching and learning.
CZI announced two new AI developer tools for education designed to help developers seamlessly integrate high-quality educational content into the platform. Knowledge Graph helps developers enrich AI system inputs with learning science research, state academic standards, and curriculum. Evaluators also help developers assess the output of AI systems to ensure they meet the accuracy, rigor, and quality essential for teaching and learning.
In addition to these new private beta tools, CZI also announced the appointment of a new advisory board that includes experts in schools, data privacy, artificial intelligence, educational technology, and learning sciences.
“With the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, it is becoming increasingly important to improve the quality of output from large-scale language models, especially when student learning and outcomes are concerned,” said CZI Director of Education said Sandra Liu Huang. “CZI partners with experts in education, research, and technology to ensure the high quality of artificial intelligence tools and support educators in their efforts to unlock the full potential of every student.”
These new tools help schools address everyday challenges by providing technology developers with the resources to co-build tools with educators and build high-quality, research-backed AI solutions for education. It’s part of CZI’s efforts to help you do just that.
Core AI resources for education developers
Through Knowledge Graph and Evaluators, CZI leverages its learning science expertise and technological strengths to help edtech developers incorporate rigorous, high-quality educational content into the platform and improve the entire infrastructure of AI-driven education products. I will make it possible.
To help developers improve the quality of their input, Knowledge Graph starts with two main interconnected datasets. One is a high-quality, open-licensed core math curriculum in partnership with Illustral Math, and the other is academic standards for all 50 states in partnership with 1EdTech.
For evaluators, CZI also worked with academic experts to help educational technology developers support teachers to close gaps in student reading comprehension. They utilized Student Achievement Partners’ literary rubric to assess the complexity of AI-generated text output. They also worked with English Language Arts experts from The Achievement Network and Gradient Learning to evaluate the dataset.
The private beta phase includes initial collaborations with Playlab and Diffit, which are piloting tools to improve AI-based education services.
Educational Advisory Committee
CZI is also announcing an Education Advisory Board that will bring together a diverse group of experts to guide efforts to advance the use of AI to transform learning and improve educational outcomes.
The members of the advisory committee are:
