As interest in the development and economic opportunities of artificial intelligence continues to grow, institutions across the state have come together to form the New Mexico Artificial Intelligence Consortium to advance the development and understanding of AI and machine learning.
Founding members of the New Mexico AI Consortium believe teamwork will allow New Mexico to play a larger role in the field of artificial intelligence. The collaboration includes Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, University of New Mexico (UNM), New Mexico State University (NMSU), New Mexico Mining Technological University (NM Tech), and Central New Mexico Community College (CNM). Included. New Mexico Consortium.
”This collaboration with New Mexico labs and universities is an exciting collaboration that will strengthen our ability to harness the potential of artificial intelligence to solve the most important challenges in science and security and build a wide-ranging team. It provides an opportunity,” Jason Pruett said. , Director, National Security AI Office, Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Each partner institution brings unique capabilities to the project. Sandia National Laboratories brings expertise in AI security, reliability, scientific and data-driven machine learning, co-design of AI software and hardware, and more. Los Alamos National Laboratory provides expertise in high-performance computing, advanced modeling, and data analysis. The resources of both national laboratories will provide the computational power needed to develop AI capabilities and technologies.
“By uniting New Mexico’s leading research institutions, we are creating an ecosystem that accelerates advances in AI while ensuring these technologies are robust, secure, and beneficial to society. This consortium positions New Mexico as a national leader in developing trusted AI solutions for national security, energy, and other critical challenges,” said Jen Gaudioso, director of the Sandia National Laboratories Center for Computing Research. says Mr.
In addition to fostering the development of AI technology and data security, the consortium will also help provide cutting-edge insights to state residents through comprehensive educational programs and professional training initiatives.
“AI will have a profound impact on research and education around the world. The NM AI Consortium will help New Mexicans understand the risks and benefits of this new technology and help solve important problems in science, engineering, and medicine. “We’re going to work to make sure we understand how we can use it. We’re building a talented workforce here in New Mexico that uses AI to solve problems.” Melanie, Professor of Science and Special Advisor to the Vice President for Artificial Intelligence Research Moses said.
UNM, NMSU, NM Tech, and CNM provide the consortium’s research power, flexibility, and talent development pipeline. CNM’s existing certificate in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning provides an excellent opportunity to provide relevant content to students early in their studies. Through the collaboration, both institutions will be able to provide educational opportunities in AI to students at all academic levels.
“NMSU is pleased to collaborate with other research institutions in the state and two national laboratories to coordinate AI research and education efforts,” said NMSU College of Arts and Sciences Dean and Regents Professor of Computer Science said Enrico Pontelli. “Combining talent has the potential to put New Mexico on the national map as a leader in AI. NMSU has a long tradition of work in this area, and this will allow us to leverage such talent. , we can connect that to the strong efforts that are happening across the state.”
These institutions hope to work as a collective and collaborate with industry, including by supporting AI-based startups and facilitating technology transfer. Ultimately, this effort could create an AI ecosystem in the state, contributing to job creation and diversification of the local economy.
