Capital Region, New York (WRGB) — The semiconductor industry is growing rapidly in the region, and local businesses are looking to expand their workforce.
There are companies out there who want to help veterans take the first step towards a new career.
From pneumatics to mechanical engineering to mechatronics, New York Creates is training the next generation of semiconductor engineers.
All through the Veterinary Steps program.
Joseph Hagen/U.S. Army Veteran:
“I had heard about semiconductors before, but I didn’t really understand what they did, how they were made, or the process.”
The program is targeted at veterans and soon-to-be-discharged military personnel, many of whom have skills that can be used in the semiconductor industry.
Paul Kelly, Chief Operating Officer, NY Creates:
“It’s pretty amazing how well the military prepares people for jobs like the semiconductor industry. … A helicopter repairman, for example, has skills that would be very useful to become an equipment technician in one of our factories.”
Hundreds of people have taken part in the 10-week program, including Joseph Hagen, a U.S. Army veteran who served as a tank crew member.
“So this is all at the most basic level, and then you put it all together and you have these complex machines. So it’s kind of a process of putting it all together, in little strokes.”
The need for a strong workforce arises as organizations like New York Creates receive significant funding from state and federal governments and develop international relationships.
The company raised $10 billion in December to expand and build new cleanrooms.
This summer we will strengthen our partnership with the Dutch Royal Family and Japanese government officials.
Paul Kelly, Chief Operating Officer, NY Creates:
“There is currently a shortage of talent in the market to fill these roles, so positions and organizations like this that help grow the industry’s talent pipeline are critical for our partners.”
For Hagen and others, it’s a transition to civilian life with job security.
“It’s mentally challenging, so that’s what I’m looking for. I don’t want a job where I can just sit there all day. I have to pay absolute attention. This job will serve as the next step in building a sustainable career in this field. I’ll get some practice and see if it’s something I really want to do.”
